Seeking a Literary Agent
I’m seeking representation for my nonfiction book, We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For, How Survivors Stood Up, Organized, and Fought Back Against Sexual Abuse.
My book documents the last twenty-five years of activism by survivors of sexual abuse who created a social movement to end sexual violence and challenged a society where one in four women and one out of six men have been sexually abused. This movement joins other great social movements, such as the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements, to compel political and cultural change.
The book includes exclusive interviews and stories of survivors who created hundreds of advocacy organizations and thousands of initiatives that fuel the movement, including high-profile survivors of actor Bill Cosby, recording artist R. Kelly, Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar, and victims of Catholic clergy.
As a survivor of rape when I was twelve, I began my activism in 1995 when memories of my abuse surfaced several decades later, fueling my passion for justice and accountability. I volunteered as an advocate and activist with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, SNAP, for almost thirty years. I’ve communicated with thousands of survivors, serving in SNAP’s national leadership for twelve years and three years as President of the Board.
I’ve been interviewed by hundreds of national media outlets in the U.S. and media from at least seventeen other countries. I’ve researched extensively, creating a database of 240 allied organizations, a timeline of events, and a fifty-page bibliography. I have written over 40k words with over 400 citations, about halfway towards completing the book of 80k words. Related information and graphics are available on my website, StandupSpeakup.org.
Poet June Jordan inspires the book’s title, which celebrates women protesting apartheid: “We are the ones we have been waiting for.”
